Messiah Youth Group Events
June - December 2008

July 3, 2008Park Ridge Fireworks at Messiah – The annual Park Ridge Fireworks are on July 3rd.  Invite a friend and don’t miss it.  We can also use your help to sell refreshments!

July 18-19, 2008Youth Lock-in at Messiah to Prepare for VBS – With Vacation Bible School right around the corner, we will have a lock-in to have some food, fellowship, and fun with all the Youth Leaders for the program.  We will learn the program and songs so that you can be ready to help out with the kids that come to this special ministry at Messiah.  As many of you know, the VBS program continues to grow.  It is a chance for us to put our best foot forward, so this evening of preparation will ensure we do a great job.  And, yes, we will find time for a game or two of “sardines” in the church!  Times to be announced, but we most likely will start about 6pm on Friday night.

July 28- Aug 1, 2008VBS at Messiah – The Faith Finders Detective Club will begin in full swing on Monday July 28th.  We will need your help to lead the children, and help teach them about God and His great love for us.  VBS had about 70 kids attend last year and we would love to have you come help work with the kids, teach them the songs, lead some crafts, etc.  There is a role for everyone, so please mark this on your calendar.

Youth Group Rummage Sale

We are planning to have a “youth run” rummage sale on Friday August 15 and Saturday August 16. The proceeds will be split between the Messiah Youth Group and the Maine Township Food Pantry. The work will consist of bringing out the goods for sale on Friday morning, running the sale, moving unsold goods back into the Church on Friday evening and then doing it over again on Saturday. The sale will run from 9am until 3pm each day. At the end of the sale, any unsold goods will be donated to a charity.

In order to make this event a success we need the help of the congregation in at least 2 areas. First, we need your stuff! Please start looking through those closets, garages, attics, crawl spaces, etc and locate goods you have been meaning to part with but haven't had the chance. We would like you to bring those to the church between August 1st and August 12th, dropping them off in the Fellowship Hall. (We want to wait until the first week of August to collect goods so we don't interfere with VBS taking place at the church from July 28 - August 1.) Second, we can use your time and expertise at rummage sales to "chaperone" the youth on Friday and Saturday. Look on the "Yes! Sheets" for a chance to sign up for a shift on Friday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, or Saturday afternoon. It will be a great way to meet and work with Messiah's youth!

We would like to make this a huge success to help earn some money for our Youth to "fix up" the basement of the parsonage for a space of their own and collect some money for the Maine Township Food Pantry!

September 13, 2008 -- Volunteering at Greater Chicago Food Depository -- We will meet at Messiah early in the morning on Saturday September 13th (7:30am) to leave and arrive at the GCFD to volunteer from 9amNoon.  We will have lunch and then drive back to Messiah.  This will be a fun event to which you can invite you friends.    Some of you have volunteered at the GCFD before.  This is also an event where your parents can join us!

October 24, 2008“Coffee House” Open Mike at Park Ridge Presbyterian Church – The Youth Group at the Park Ridge Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a “coffee house” and open mike night on Friday night October 24th.  We have been invited to join them and participate.  More information will be coming in the future, but mark your calendars now!  This is a great way to meet other Christians from the Park Ridge Community…many with whom you may go to school!

November 1, 2008Annual Youth Spaghetti Dinner -- The Annual Spaghetti Dinner will be this day.  The Confirmation Class that will begin in the fall of 2008 will only have 3 students, so I am sure they would welcome your help in setting up, cooking, serving, and cleaning up.  This is always a wonderful event at Messiah and has been a great tradition.  I hope you will mark this date on your calendar and come help us make this year’s event a success!

November 15, 2008Messiah Harvest Festival – The annual Harvest Festival is scheduled for this Saturday.  We are always in need of volunteers to set up, host, sell refreshments, and clean up and other activities.

December, 2008To be Announced – Christmas Youth Event – We will look for a volunteer service project we can do in early December with the Youth Group to make the Christmas season a little special for those not as fortunate as we are.  Perhaps it will be an afternoon of volunteering at Lutheran General on the Pediatrics Unit, deliver gifts to children, or some other project.  Look for more information!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Other Non-Scheduled – Throughout the second half of this year we will look for opportunities to volunteer and “With Christ, reach out and welcome all of God’s children”.  We will have opportunities to spend time with the pediatrics unit at Lutheran General, work with other youth groups in Park Ridge, work within our church on Celebration Sunday Pancake Breakfasts, and interact and volunteer time with our Sunday school!

We also have a large project we want to take on soon….Cleaning, painting, and creating a youth room in the basement of the parsonage.  We want to make this a place where we can have a “youth hang out” for pool, ping-pong, games, fellowship and fun, along with deepening our relationship with God and with one another!
