Messiah Youth Group Events
Winter-Spring 2009

Check out all the fun stuff coming up for our Youth!!
I hope each and everyone of you had a blessed Christmas!

As we celebrate the coming of our Lord, I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know some things that are coming up with the Messiah Youth Group.  I hope you will fully participate.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
First, we will be gearing up in January we will begin work for the "Souper Bowl of Caring".  We have participated at Messiah the last two years, collecting a little over $700 over the two years for the Maine Township Food Pantry.  This year, let's aim to collect $750 and at least 50 food items.  I have one poster hanging in the church, but we need to start talking about this event.  I will work with Jennifer to put some information in the Bulletin, but perhaps beginning the week of Jan 18th (two week before the Souper Bowl) we can have a group of Youth attend worship in football jerseys and after the service have a little table in the narthex with posters and handouts reminding people of the Souper Bowl?

We have to do some work to plan, advertise to the church and Child Care Center, and work to support the food pantry.  You can learn more about the Souper Bowl at
http://www.souperbowl.org/

Check the site out!  Last year, nationwide, over $10 million was collected!  This is the 20th year for the event, let's make it the best we can.  It would be great to have a Youth Leader volunteer to champion, organize his/her peers, and make this event really work at Messiah.  For those of you needing community service hours for Honor Society, Scouts, or some other organization this would be a great way to earn those. If you want to help lead the effort, let me know!

OUTING TO UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH as NORTHWESTERN
Last year we did this in the Spring, and I think everyone had a great time.  I have been trading e-mails with the group there and hope to have something set up for late January or early February.  We would go there on a Friday evening, spend the evening with fellowship and dinner, a worship service, some games and fun, and some learning about social justice issues.  The next morning we would participate with their group at a service event....Last year we went to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.  We may do that again or something with the Night Ministry.  I have more planning to do, but more to come.  This is a great time for the confirmation class and High School group!

SKATING and LASER TAG
I still have a gift certificate I bought at a charity auction to Public Ice Skating Admission, Skate Rental, and Laser Tag for up to 10 people!  The gift certificate expires on May 3, 2009.  We attempted to use it this past summer after we worked on cleaning up the parsonage basement, but we did not have enough attendees (by the way, we are half done in that basement.....I put a 35 inch TV down there and a DVD player....there is ping-pong, bumper pool, and an air hockey table....with a little more work and a bit of furniture we would have a place to hang out for the Youth Group!)   Now, if we can find a service project we can do locally in the spring, we can do that on a Saturday morning and go have some fun with skating and Laser Tag.....I need your help and suggestions.....Get them to me quickly and we will look to make this an outing and event in March!

Have a wonderful New Year.  Stay Safe.

Do Justice, Love Kindness, and Walk Humbly with God,

Floyd Yager
